Dr. Jan-Erik Leonhardt is currently serving as acting professor of
TEFL at the Department of English and American Studies at TU Braunschweig.
He previously worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Teaching
English as a Foreign Language at Goethe University Frankfurt. Between 2017 and
2022, he also taught English and German at secondary level. His research
interests include film-based English language education, the digital
transformation of language education, critical foreign language pedagogy, and
science communication in English language education.

In this study, I examine the levels
of film literacy among learners in grades 6, 8, and 10 in EFL classrooms. Using
a mixed-methods approach, my study combines results from a questionnaire on the
use of films (n=671), a competency test (n=626), and a group interview (n=36). Based on this data, I
redefine the concept of film literacy, identify key predictors for learners'
film literacy, and provide evidence-based principles for film-based language
teaching.
