Workshop
On 28 October 2026, the Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) department hosted a workshop for primary school English teachers, organised by Stefanie Frisch and Kira Schad. Twenty-six teachers from Frankfurt and the surrounding region attended.

The workshop explored the challenges of writing in English as a foreign language and ways to motivate and support young writers. Participants were introduced to engaging writing tasks for the upcoming Christmas season and different approaches to providing feedback on young learners’ written work were discussed.

The workshop also provided an opportunity to discuss school-university research partnerships. Later this school year, classroom investigations involving individual participants will explore questions concerning the particular challenges of providing teacher feedback on young learners’ writing.

Participants responded positively to the workshop and emphasised the importance of professional development opportunities specifically tailored to primary school English teachers.

TEFL welcomes new English students

This winter semester, 220 students have enrolled in teacher education programmes with English as one of their subjects. The Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) team welcomed the new students at an introductory event, introducing the department and guiding them through the modules and school placement semester. The event also highlighted opportunities to integrate a stay abroad into their studies.

We wish all our new students a successful and enjoyable start to their studies!

Connecting TEFL Research: The First Frankfurt × Braunschweig Colloquium

IEAS_TEFL_ColloquiumXBraunschweig

On 29–30 September 2026, researchers from Goethe University Frankfurt and TU Braunschweig came together at Frankfurt's Campus Westend for the first TEFL Research Colloquium Frankfurt × Braunschweig. The programme reflected the breadth of current TEFL research supervised by Prof. Dr. Stefanie Frisch, Prof. Dr. Britta Viebrock, Prof. Dr. Carmen Becker and Jun.-Prof. Dr. Jan-Erik Leonhardt. Contributions addressed writing in primary English education, neurodivergence in English classrooms, critical literacy and democratic participation through artistic practices, and international school placements for pre-service EFL teachers. Further topics included gender and LGBTQIA+ representation in series-based English teaching, as well as artificial intelligence and critical digital literacy.

With short presentations followed by extended discussions, the colloquium placed feedback and collaborative thinking at its centre. It welcomed projects at different stages, from initial conceptual and methodological considerations to data analysis and preliminary findings. Each discussion also included time to consider strategic questions about doctoral and postdoctoral qualification pathways and concrete next steps. The second day extended this focus to the framing text for cumulative qualifications and concluded with reflection on future collaboration.

Shared meals, a campus walk and an evening in Sachsenhausen offered further opportunities to connect beyond the formal sessions. Bringing together diverse research interests and perspectives, the first Frankfurt × Braunschweig colloquium created a forum for developing ideas, discussing challenges and strengthening connections between the two TEFL research communities.
