ATFLY 2025

Around 260 international guests from 46 countries gathered in mid-June for ATFLY 2025 (Advances in Teaching Foreign Languages to Young Learners). The online conference was organised by Prof. Dr. Stefanie Frisch (Goethe University Frankfurt, Teaching English as a Foreign Language), Prof. Dr. Karen Glaser and Anne Schrader (both University of Leipzig) and Dr. Constanze Dreßler (University of Wuppertal).

On 19 and 20 June 2025, researchers, teachers and students exchanged ideas on current research in early foreign language learning. After welcoming remarks by Prof. Dr. Viera Pirker (Vice President for Studies and Teaching at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main) and Prof. Dr. Birgitta Wolff (Rector of the University of Wuppertal), participants were able to choose from a diverse programme of presentations on topics such as virtual exchange projects, assessment, task-based language teaching and literacy.

The conference programme consisted of three keynote speeches, 26 presentations in nine thematic sections, three round tables and poster presentations. ATFLY is a conference format that provides a framework for international academic exchange on early foreign language learning every three years.

As early foreign language learning is becoming increasingly important worldwide, the organisers opted for an international and virtual format. 'We are overwhelmed by the high quality of the presentations and the high number of participants. We are delighted to now be able to publish the key findings,' said conference organisers Stefanie Frisch and Karen Glaser. The ATFLY 2022 conference proceedings have been published by John Benjamins as an open access publication: https://benjamins.com/catalog/lllt.62
